Sundolitt XPS has been installed as part of an inverted green roof solution at a new community care centre in Derbyshire. The extruded polystyrene sheet was specified for the £8 million development in picturesque Darley Dale to provide high levels of strength, insulation and rigidity.
BBS Green Roofing Ltd was contacted to provide and install a natural roofing solution for the Meadow View Community Care Centre, a new facility from Derbyshire County Council.
The care centre includes 16 long-term residential care beds and 16 short-term beds aimed at helping people return home after respite care and rehabilitation. The facility also features a 20 place day centre, café and health and well-being zone.
Due to the project’s location in the Derwent valley, close to the edge of the Peak District National Park, the building needed to be sympathetic to the surrounding environment.
The chosen inverted green roof solution used Sundolitt XPS to incorporate a strong sub-structure whist achieving high levels of thermal protection – with a thermal conductivity of 0.033-0.037 W/mK (EN 13164).
Manufactured in a wide range of thicknesses and sheet sizes, it also achieves a compression resistance from 200 – 700 kPa (EN826) and due to its closed-pore system offers exceptional low moisture absorption. It is available in square or shiplap edge, with the latter having the advantage of preventing thermal bridging and capillary action.
Already a preferred solution in industrial flooring where high insulation and strength attributes are critical, Sundolitt XPS is becoming increasingly specified in inverted roof applications. Sandlot XPS Sales Manager Bryan Mawer commented:
“XPS gives high rigidity and impact strength as well as exceptional thermal performance. It will not deteriorate over time nor is it affected by high moisture levels. For all these reasons it is being used in commercial flooring and domestic foundations, as well as inverted and flat roofing applications, where heavy loads and potential moisture levels are encountered”
The Meadow View Community Care centre opened this summer. Visit the Sundolitt website to find out more about its XPS extruded polystyrene sheets.
