Charcon has delivered bespoke kerbing for Cambridge’s Huntingdon Road Cycleway, which forms a new sustainable transport link.
The Huntingdon Road cycleway scheme aims to address Cambridge’s issues with traffic capacity by encouraging sustainable modes of transport.
The 1.5km hybrid cycle track has been raised above the existing carriageway. 2,880 bespoke kerbs have been manufactured to act as a partition between the carriageway and cycleway.
After realising that standard kerbing could cause accidents among cyclists – particularly those who intend to join the cycleway at an acute angle – Cambridgeshire County Council’s Cycling Infrastructure Team collaborated with Skanska to develop a new concept in cycleway kerbing.
Following the design’s completion, Charcon proposed a bespoke ‘Cambridge’ Kerb for installation. The Council commissioned 1,100 kerbs with the depth of full height bullnosed kerbs.
The first load of kerbs was delivered to site in January 2015.
With 12.5 degree horizontal profiles, they have been designed to withstand vehicle overrun, whilst allowing for a smooth transition between the existing carriageway and the new cycle lane.
