Asda Scunthorpe benefitting from new waterproofing system

Built-Up Roof waterproofing system delivers disruption free installation

  • 4 Jan 2016

Sika Liquid Plastics Built-Up Roof waterproofing system has been installed at an Asda store in Scunthorpe as part of a complete roof refurbishment by Ice Roofing.

Originally constructed in 1976, the building was suffering from water ingress and its roof was in urgent need of repair.

It was determined that a cold applied waterproofing solution would be used so that the store could remain open throughout the project – and therefore 2,000 square metres of Sika Liquid Plastics waterproofing system was specified.

Gareth Davies of Ice Roofing commented: “We knew that our partnership with Sika Liquid Plastics would give us the advantage of additional expertise when specfying a product for the project.”

Sika conducted a detailed survey of the area, including thermal imaging to identify where the real original problem areas were.

He explained: “This enabled us to reduce the area of roof we would have to completely strip back to the steel deck, which was really significant in keeping disruption to a minimum.”

Further challenges were presented to the team when asbestos was found in areas of the felt which needed to be stripped away.

Ice Roofing brought in experts to remove the existing substrate containing asbestos whilst maintaining the integrity of the store’s waterproofing and complying with strict HSE standards.

Disruption free installation

The project was completed over 10 weeks. Two teams of three people first adjusted the height of the roof by increasing the insulation thickness around various complex details.

Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane Gamma 20 roof coating system was then applied over the area in a Slate Grey colour. As the Built-Up Roof system is cold applied, the store could remain operational throughout the development.

A mineralised walkway was also installed at the premises to allow for easy access if future maintenance work was to occur.

Gareth added: “We worked fast and smart to deliver a seamless finish on the roof, with the liquid system offering ease of application around plant and penetrations. The superior 20-year guarantee, signed off by Sika Liquid Plastics when works were completed, sealed the deal for the client.”
