Martin Langen of B+L Market Data predicted strong growth for Passivhaus windows at 2015’s SWISSPACER European Symposium in Potsdam.
The forecasts presented by the MD were based on research with window manufacturers across Europe. 50 British manufacturers contributed to the study.
The forecasts suggest that, by 2020, windows with U-values of 0.8 W/m2K or below will dominate 10%, 25% and 30% of the market in the UK, Germany and Austria respectively. These Passivhaus windows are also predicted to compose up to 35% of the market in Switzerland.
As a ‘fabric first’ approach to low energy building, Passivhaus aims to reduce the need for space heating and cooling, whilst cutting energy usage and CO2 emissions by a factor of 10.
The standard, which is promoted by the Passivhaus Institute and the BRE, requires exceptional thermal performance, airtightness and mechanical ventilation. The standard has developed considerably over the past few years: a traditional heating system is no longer considered essential for Passivhaus heating.
SWISSPACER’s Ultimate warm edge spacer bar has achieved Passivhaus certification, ensuring its suitability for use on any Passivhaus project. It has been listed in 70% of windows, 86% of windows with fixed glazing and 97% of curtain wall systems in the Passivhaus database of certified components.
