A 1960’s bungalow is set to become Jersey’s first EnerPHit certified home, thanks to the application of the Kingspan TEK Building System.
Situated within Jersey’s Green Zone conservation area, the property was subject to a sensitive redesign and extension which combines a range of traditional materials with a high performance building envelope specification.
The Jersey property is expected to achieve Passivhaus EnerPHit standard thanks to the application of Kingspan TEK
To deliver the Passivhaus EnerPHit standard of performance, Jeco Homes Ltd used the Kingspan TEK Building System to replace the existing roof and form the walls of the new extension.
Kingspan TEK Building System panels comprise a high performance insulated core placed between two layers of OSB/3, allowing them to deliver an outstanding level of thermal insulation.
The walls of the new extension featured an additional 50mm layer of Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board fitted with the Kingspan TEK Building System panels – allowing the extension walls to achieve a U-value of 0.16 W/m2K.
To allow additional bedroom accommodation to be created within the roof space, the original roof was replaced with Kingspan TEK Building System panels and the pitch was changed from 30 to 40 degrees.
The panels were lifted into place using a mobile crane and benefitted from a 50mm Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board to help the roof achieve a U-value of 0.18 W/m2K.
The EnerPHit Standard
In addition to requiring excellent thermal performance, the EnerPhit standard also requires air loss from properties to be limited to 1 air change per hour at 50 pa. The Kingspan TEK Building System helps achieve this through its unique jointing system, coupled with the building’s internal airtight membrane.
At the high levels of airtightness required by the EnerPHit standard, it is essential to maintain airflow with a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system (MVHR). The MVHR system converts heat from outgoing stale air into warm incoming fresh air, helping to further reduce heating demand and energy consumption.
Kingspan TEK panels
Both the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panels and Building System panels are now available in a 172mm thickness, delivering U-values of 0.16 W/m2K or better, without the need for additional insulation.
The manufacturing facility which produces the panels carries both FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody certification. As standard, the OSB/3 facing of Kingspan TEK panels is PEFC certified at 70 percent.
