How to improve wheelchair accessible toilet specification

  • 10 Feb 2016

By specifying ceiling hoists and wall-mounted changing facilities for installation, architects and providers can ensure that wheelchair accessible toilets are compliant with current equality law, Building Regulations and user requirements.

According to the current Building Regulations’ Approved Document M, toilet accommodation must be made suitable for all those that may need to use the building.

The Document recognises that conventional accessible toilets do not meet everyone’s needs: wheelchair users often require more space and equipment for assistance.

2010’s Equality Act also requires providers to recognise disadvantageous aspects of built environments; they must make adjustments to rectify these features before changes are demanded by the public.

Improving wheelchair accessible facilities

By fitting an adult-sized changing bench and a hoist into a wheelchair accessible washroom, the required level of compliance can be achieved.

Although a space of 12 square metres would be ideal for wheelchair accessible toilets, this can rarely be achieved as standard. By installing a ceiling-mounted hoist and a foldable wall-mounted changing bench, providers can cater for all, whilst saving space and money.

As a prominent British supplier of accessible toilet facilities for disabled and elderly people, Clos-o-Mat offers full project maintenance and support for such developments.
