Wienerberger has unveiled its shortlist of the 50 selected projects nominated for the 2016 Brick Award.
The Wienerberger Brick Award is a biannual architectural award which recognises outstanding examples of modern and innovative brick architecture.
Having receiving over 600 online submissions from 55 different countries, Wienerberger’s panel of critics selected the 50 shortlisted projects for the award, which comprises five categories:
Nominees for the Urban Refill award include Forest Mews by Robert & Jessica Barker, a redevelopment of an urban brownfield site and Herringbone House by Chan and Ears, an urban development set amongst Victorian homes.
Nominated for the Public Use award is Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, a multi-functional building for the London School of Economics, designed by O’Donnell & Tuomey.
Meanwhile, Seven Acres by Formation Architects, a development of 128 dwellings in Cambridge developed with detailed master plans and design is nominated for the Residential Use Award.
A full list of nominees can be viewed on the Brick Award website.
The Award winners will be determined by a jury of architects, who will assess each project based on criteria including: innovative exterior design; skilful use of brick; functionality; sustainability and energy efficiency.
Applications ranged from building solution with classic clay building blocks and facing bricks to the creative use of ceramic façade panels, roof tiles and clay pavers.
Special attention is given to how the building compliments its surroundings in addition to the form, aesthetics and quality of the architecture.
The use of Wienerberger product is not a necessary condition of participation.
The jury for the 2016 Brick Award consists of: Laura Andreini (Archea Associati, Italy), Johan Anrys (51N4E, Belgium), Matija Bevk (bevk perovic arhitekti, Slovenia) and Alfred Munkenbeck (Munkenbeck + Partners, UK).
The Brick Award ceremony will take place in Vienna on the 18th May 2016.
Wienerberger will produce a comprehensive book entitled “Brick 16” along with Callwey Publishing House, featuring all 50 nominated and award-winning projects, which will also be published in May.
