Student architects can benefit from industry connections, says Reynaers

A recent survey, conducted by Reynaers at Home, has revealed that personal connections can help student architects to secure jobs when they are starting out.

According to 41% of respondents, having a university education can help student architects to secure their first jobs. However, this figure has dropped considerably since Reynaers at Home’s previous survey, which was carried out in 2013.

The perceived importance of work experience has also dropped slightly, with only 23% of architects surveyed citing it as the most useful way of securing their first jobs.

However, personal connections were cited by 28% of architects this year, compared to a meagre 14% in 2013. Architects also cited determination, eagerness and design skills as useful attributes to have when applying for jobs.

Help for student architects

Reynaers at Home has summarised its findings: “The best way to get a job in architecture is from a university education,” says Marketing Manager, Rebecca Cope.

However, the company’s research shows that key personality traits, such as determination and self-confidence, may be required to obtain certain architectural positions.

Reynaers is committed to helping budding architects: it has developed a programme if university lectures to assist students with practical experience.

The company aims to help students to develop their understanding of contemporary window and door technology to enhance their architectural knowledge and widen career prospects.
