Are you unsure which guttering material is best for your client’s home or workplace? There are a range of materials to choose from, usually dependant on factors such as; your clients’ budget, practical needs and the style they require.
Each material possesses its own set of advantages and disadvantages, so it’s best to know the pros and cons of each before coming to a decision.
According to Live Science, aluminium is the second most abundant metallic element in Earth’s crust after silicon. It is also the most commonly used material for guttering.
Aluminium possesses a strength to weight ratio which makes it ideal for building projects. As well as being aesthetically impressive and available in a broad range of colours, it is also corrosion resistant, perfect for rainwater.
However, it is susceptible to corrosion if it hasn’t been stored correctly. Aluminium will also oxidise over a long period of time – this appears as white residue and pitting.
It can also be quite costly compared to cheaper alternatives.
Galvanised steel on the other hand is low in cost and benefits from a long life expectancy. In addition it requires little maintenance and a full protection coat can be applied in minutes.
Whilst its zinc barrier can prevent rusting for a certain amount of time, this eventually wears out, causing internal rusting to occur.
Another issue with galvanised steel is that the threat joints which connect the pipes are often unstable and prone to rusting and leaks.
In addition to its attractive appearance, vinyl is waterproof, hard-wearing and offers protection from the sun.
Some vinyl material however can be of poor quality, and can become brittle in extreme cold weather or over a long period of time.
Plastic is lightweight, easy to install and strong, which means less chance of corrosion. It is extremely flexible, affordable and aesthetically appealing.
Whilst plastic is a popular choice, long exposure to UV rays can cause the material to deteriorate. In addition, sectional guttering tends to creak when warming up or cooling down, dependant on the weather.
Cotswold Rainwater can offer advice on the best type of material for your guttering specification, with over 35 years experience installing and repairing all types of guttering. The company also has a range of high quality materials available to choose from.
