Watertight roofing solution installed at Bracknell church

  • 16 Mar 2016

Severe rainwater leaks in the auditorium of Bracknell’s Kerith Community Church has resulted in the bespoke specification of a Sarnafil Plus roofing system, including Kingspan insulation, Sarnvap 500E SA and Sika Sarnafil G410-18ELF Lead Grey membrane.

The church’s auditorium space sits below a pitched, fan shaped roof structure. As a result of the roof’s unusual shape, rainwater would breach the slates and lead-lined gutters, landing in the centre of the auditorium.

Pitched roof installation

Health and safety amounted to 45% of the cost of the project, due to the 22 degree angle of the pitched roof.

Architects Allen Associates, alongside Owlsworth Roofing, decided that a seamless and durable single ply solution was needed to resolve the issue.

The Sika Sarnafil Plus roofing system was chosen, thanks to the wide range of support services offered by Sika, and the fact that the building could remain fully operational throughout the duration of the project.

The project involved the removal of all slates, battens, counter battens and insulation from the previous roof.

Due to the direction of the fan shaped roof structure, all of the stripped materials, new materials and personnel had to be transported through the centre of the church, into a central courtyard and out to the carpark via narrow corridors.

It was important that the structural timber deck, which also acted as the internal ceiling, did not have any visible fixings. The new cable-based fall restraint system was designed using a series of timber boxes secured to the deck, so that the bolt which attached the system’s posts only penetrated the box and were not visible from the underside.

The finished roof used a Sarnafil G410-18ELF Lead Grey membrane and was awarded a 20 year guarantee from Sika.
