Concrete repair at the Pavilion

Concrete repair systems specified for historic pavilion revitalisation

  • 16 Mar 2016

A number of Sika’s concrete repair and protection systems have been used in a Heritage Lottery Funded regeneration of Doncaster’s Bentley Park Pavilion.

The pavilion was erected in 1931, under the Miners Welfare Scheme. The concrete structure was damaged and required a complete renovation; this was addressed as part of a community project, managed by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, to reform Bentley Park.

Carried out over a total of 30 weeks, the programme of works was undertaken by the project’s appointed contractor, William Anelay. It included concrete repairs to the pavilion’s existing structure and façade, internal configuration of steel columns and beams and the construction of a rear extension.

The pavilion also benefited from new roof coverings, windows and doors.

Concrete repair and protection from Sika

The structural improvements to the building were delivered by JDF Restoration. The contractor fitted a number of concrete repair and protection systems from Sika to remedy signs of spalling or weak concrete. The products also worked to reform the pavilion’s ornate corners, columns and mouldings.

After old coatings were removed and the building’s substructure was exposed, Sika Monotop was applied. Consisting of polymer modified mortars, the cementitious system was used to smooth the structure and prepare it for overcoating.

Designed to resist penetration by water and chloride, Monotop will work to protect any exposed areas of the pavilion’s concrete structure from the elements and potential damage.

To complete the application, JDF used Sika Ferrogard 903 to penetrate the concrete and provide a final protective layer around the structure’s steel reinforcement. An acrylic coating of Sika’s water-based Sikagard 675W was then applied to improve the external appearance of the pavilion, whilst protecting it from weathering and the effects of aging.
