ROCKWOOL soundproofs Olympic Park stadium ahead of West Ham move

Lakesmere has specified and installed ROCKWOOL insulation at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park stadium ahead of West Ham United’s move to the venue next season.

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park stadium is set to become the permanent home of Premier League football club West Ham United, having previously been the centrepiece of the London 2012 Olympic Games. 

West Ham has been granted a 99 year tenancy, granted on the provision that the Stadium was modified to suit its needs. 

This included extending and upgrading the roof system to cover the increased seating capacity – as new area of retractable seating was installed over the running track to meet the different capacity and functional requirements.

Soundproofing the Olympic Stadium

Building envelope contractor Lakesmere specified an acoustically insulated membrane – featuring ROCKWOOL HARDROCK Multi-Fix (DD) and ROCKWELL Acoustic Infills – to retain and reflect the crowd noise within the stadium whilst ensuring it does not disrupt the surrounding areas.

West Ham will move into the 80,000 capacity stadium ahead of the 2016/2017 football season.

ROCKWOOL HARDROCK Multi-Fix (DD) is a versatile flat roof board solution, ideal for steel deck applications. The board can be securely fitted with mechanically fixed systems with just a single fixing, and carries both excellent acoustic and fire resistant properties, managing airborne sound levels and controlling sound reverberation without the need for any additional layers.

Lakesmere carried out specified acoustic testing at the SRL to ensure the product met all specific acoustic requirements, before installing approximately 27,000m2 of 50mm HARDROCK Multi-Fix (DD).

An additional 96,000 linear metres of ROCKWOOL Acoustic Infills were installed to provide a combination of optimised density, fibre direction and excellent fit to satisfy the required levels of sound absorption.
