Architectural ironmongers urged to prepare for BIM

The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) has published a new technical guide to Building Information Modelling, after the practice became compulsory on all public sector projects on April 4th.

The GAI Guide to BIM outlines what BIM obligations architectural ironmongers and hardware manufacturers will need to fulfil to work on public sector projects from April.

The 21-page guide also highlights pitfalls to avoid, such as expensive and unnecessary investments and potential business opportunities.

BIM involves the creation of a digital computer model which contains all the data relating to a building project. The UK Government made BIM mandatory at a specified Level 2 on all public sector projects on April 4th in an effort to increase efficiency and cut costs.

Architectural ironmongers working on public sector projects will now be responsible for the handover of the relevant BIM documentation to the main contractor.
