A Sika Sarnafil singly ply membrane has been used in a problematic roofing project for 32 Ewart Grove, a new Paul Simon Homes residential development in London.
The new build housing development, which is based near London’s busy Wood Green tube station, required an aesthetically-pleasing roof to complement its contemporary flats and facilities. As the building is situated at a fork in the road, the roof can be seen when travelling up towards it, as well as from the upper floors of the surrounding buildings; it was, thus, important to create a striking look.
Unfortunately, the project presented a challenge: with two barrel roofs and a large triangulated tower at the front posing a practical issue, the original specification for a metal roof could not be carried out. The project’s budget would not allow it.
Contour Roofing, however, was determined to prove that the roof could be covered with the correct expertise and product specification. Limited by the time and money available, the company worked with Sika Sarnafil to propose a bespoke solution, in the form of a single ply membrane.
Sarnafil G410-15ELF Lead Grey, backed with a polyester fleece, was specified for use as the main roof sheet; the detail work flashings were provided by Sarnafil G410-15EL Lead Grey.
Whilst the solution itself was ideal, the installation was challenging: a variety of shapes, upstands, details and intricate sections had to be covered.
Contour Roofing worked closely with the project’s carpenter to ensure the plywood deck was fitted correctly to accommodate the membrane. Décor profiles were used to emulate the standing seams of a metal roof, in keeping with the building’s original design.
Finally, Sikalastic was specified for the guttering, demonstrating the compatibility between Sika’s different roofing products.
Both Sika Sarnafil and Contour Roofing have ben commended by the judges of the upcoming NFRC UK Roofing Awards for their work on the challenging development. The project has been shortlisted in the Single Ply category; the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in May.
