Natural ventilation for University of Ulster

Natural ventilation solution specified for new university building

  • 4 May 2016

Gilberts of Blackpool has delivered a natural ventilation solution for the University of Ulster’s new £250 million building, which has been built for its Faculty of Art, Design & the Built Environment.

Divided into a six-storey structure with a pronounced upper level, the new building features Gilberts’ Mistrale WHZ38 louvres to a bespoke design.

Installed by McLaughlin & Harvey, the louvres work to control the internal environment of the main communal area, sky walkway, classrooms and lecture theatre.

The company’s Mistrale VN75 air inlet dampers have also been incorporated into the aluminium clad façade of the building. Integrated into the building management system, the high and low level dampeners provide acoustic modulation to tackle noise ingress from Belfast’s city streets.

Energy efficient natural ventilation

The Mistrale ventilators contribute towards the energy efficiency of the building, which has a high thermal mass. Allowing for an accurate and stable airflow, with minimal air leakage and a U-value as low as 0.93W/m2K, the ventilators exceed both current and future thermal performance requirements.

At 200mm deep, the slimline systems complement the new building’s contemporary aesthetic, whilst offering a specialist natural ventilation solution.
