A new report has revealed how the DuPont Tyvek Classic Xpert Eco-Pack packaging concept can help to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
The Deloitte report, entitled ‘The Environmental Benefits of Packaging Reduction’, has revealed that the DuPont Tyvek Eco-Pack has the potential to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by the equivalent of three tonnes CO2, over the course of the packaging’s lifecycle.
This saving is roughly equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide created by taking 25 flights from Lands’ End to John o’ Groats.
Eco-Pack can also save a predicted 77,700 MJ of primary energy, reduce water consumption and decrease solid waste by 820kg. The environmental benefits of the packaging concept can help users to avoid costs, relating to the handling and disposal of packaging.
Carried out by BIO by Deloitte, the report measures and compares the environmental impact of the existing standards and the new packaging concepts, using a standardised Life Cycle Assessment approach.
Firstly, a life cycle inventory is created for the individual stages involved in the production of the polybags and IFUs, their delivery to DuPont and their onward transportation to customers and ultimate disposal.
An evaluation of their environmental impact, in terms of primary energy demand, waste generation, net water consumption and both global warming and air acidification potential, is then completed.
For the assessment, three separate scenarios were considered. They differed in terms of shipping distance, the number of garments shipped, and end-of-life scenario, which would either be landfill, incineration or recycling, depending on the waste management practice of the destination country.
