Sika fire protection coating system safeguards steel structures

  • 18 May 2016

Sika has launched a new factory-applied fire protection coating system designed for use on structural steel.

Sika Unitherm Platinum is a one layer coating that offers high mechanical strength and impact resistance.

The coating is the first fire protection system in Europe to be tested according to EN 13381-8:210 and approved with the CE marking as an international product.

The solvent-free system provides long-term protection against the effects of wear and tear due to its high mechanical strength, shock impact and abrasion resistance.

Sika Unitherm Platinum can be applied with or without primary and top coat for indoor and outdoor use. The product has excellent corrosion protection properties in high humidity and severe environmental conditions according to the standards SN EN ISO 12944-5, C5-I and C5-M.

It can be applied with ease with standard airless spray equipment and cures rapidly to form a tough and damage resistant finish, ready for handling within 24 hours.

Unitherm Platinum products can be transported without damage throughout the service life of the structure as the product does not require protection against moisture.

Sika Business Unit Manager, Mark Bushell, commented: “Unitherm Platinum is a super-strong, one-coat system which provides total protection for structural steel installations in all weathers and environments. As it can be applied prior to construction, we have not only created a coating which simplifies installation, it has ensured a safer application process.”
