Innovation Hub activity days promote employment to students

CMS Window Systems has demonstrated its commitment to promoting local employment and tackling the skills shortage by giving students an insight into working at its business.

Throughout April, CMS hosted the Primary 7 classes of six feeder primary schools for Our Lady’s High School in Cumbernauld. Based around the theme of social, environmental and economic sustainability, the educational activity days were part of a P7 transition project between the high school and its feeder primaries.

Pupils from the schools spent time at CMS’s Innovation Hub to learn about current issues in sustainable housebuilding; they were then tasked to design their own eco-homes by putting their new knowledge to use.

Promoting employment and energy efficiency

CMS’s Anna West started the sessions by speaking to the students about the structure, history, values and culture of the business. Following an induction, they spent time learning about the skills required for work, via videos, presentations and group activities.

For the rest of the morning, Sarah Wilson discussed the current issues in sustainability and housebuilding: important topics, such as recycling and waste reduction, sustainable energy, reducing power consumption and the use of ecological building materials, were covered.

The pupils were also briefed for an ‘Eco-House of the Future’ challenge: they were asked to plan, model and budget the construction of a four-bedroom eco-house in Cumbernauld. The house had to be designed to minimise the use of fossil fuels and avoid any unnecessary waste. It also had to be made from recycled and sustainable materials.

Finally, the students were given a tour of CMS’s Innovation Hub. Featuring exhibition displays from the company, the Hub showcases energy efficient building products and services. The students were shown a variety of sustainable products and procedures, to be incorporated in their eco-house designs.
