Delivering natural ventilation to challenging educational environments

  • 31 May 2016

The Mistrale Fusion (MFS) system developed by Gilberts (Blackpool) can provide effective natural ventilation in all educational environments, including teaching areas such as IT and science laboratories which suffer from greater ‘pollution’ than standard classrooms.

The MFS is made up of a combination of natural ventilation principles with heat extraction, contained within a stand-alone unit to ventilate an internal space.

The unit features a mixing damper to modulate airflow and allow for new, fresh air to mix with the warm exhaust air, therefore extracting its heat without the need for an exchanger. An integrated low energy fan energises to blend the internal air.

In a typical 32 person classroom, the MFS provides a standard flow rate of 320l/s. In enhanced mode, the MFS256 unit can provide up to 400l/s, whilst keeping noise level below 35dbA.

Its boost mode is configured for up to 550l/s, equivalent to 13 air changes per hour, to redress to the required internal temperature and air quality.

The boost also accelerates night cooling, purging the used air so ambient comfort is restored quicker and more efficiently.

A single MFS256 unit installed through a building façade will achieve current Department of Education (DfE) Building Bulletin (BB101) and PBSP guidelines for a typical 32 person classroom.

Gilberts’ Technical Director Roy Jones comments:  “Having the extra capacity as standard within our MFS units to cope with higher loads for specialist classrooms is a major advantage for specifiers, contractors and the building operator.

That advantage is further enhanced by the ability to fully purge at even higher air volumes, to redress the imbalance from specialist activity, and maintain the environmental and noise benefits required by DfE specification, at minimal cost.”
