Changing Places in the healthcare and hospital industry

  • 8 Jun 2016

Despite approximately 30% of NHS users being classed as disabled, hospitals are the second most inaccessible buildings for disabled people in the UK.

One in 284 people in the UK require a Changing Places toilet, yet of our 2,300 hospitals, not even 1% have such facilities in place – even though they are now included in ‘best practice’ Department of Health building guidelines (Health Building Notes 00-02 sanitary spaces).

Robin Tuffley, Clos-o-Mat marketing manager elaborates: “On average we visit the toilet every couple of hours or so. Out-patients and visitors therefore often need to go to the toilet when on hospital premises.

For many people, who need the help of a carer, a standard accessible toilet is inappropriate, lacking the space and equipment they need, or potentially unsafe.  A Changing Places toilet meets their needs, and provides an appropriate, hygienic and safe environment.”

Provision of Changing Places Accessible Toilets in the Healthcare/Hospitals Industry

Clos-o-Mat has published a white paper to help facilities managers understand the needs and requirements of disabled people when specifying accessible toilets in the healthcare industry.

Available to download from the Clos-o-Mat website, the white paper covers the rationale behind a Changing Places toilet and covers legislative and ‘good practice’ guidelines.

Over 840 Changing Places toilets have now been installed across the UK. Changing Places toilets are a minimum 12m2 in size and feature a height adjustable, adult-sized changing bench, hoist and privacy screen.
