Sector-specific doorsets for new school builds

Sector-specific doorsets supplied to new London schools

  • 9 Jun 2016

Working in collaboration with Wates Construction, ASSA ABLOY UK Specification has delivered a comprehensive doorset specification to schools across London’s Newham.

Together, Wates Construction and ASSA ABLOY’s UK Specification team utilised BIM technology to deliver a complete package of sector-specific doorsets and related products for the schools.

The project oversaw the successful delivery and installation of timber doorsets, glazed screens and architectural ironmongery. ASSA ABLOY’s Aperio access control system was also specified to manage traffic flow and access in each new institute.

Overcoming public sector design challenges

However, when the team came to address issues of safety, access and flow, a number of schools – namely Little Ilford, Eastbrook and Eastbury – presented several design challenges.

The team was also under pressure to meet the required standards for public sector projects, which includes the use of BIM level 2 throughout the design and build process.

By focusing on tailoring its solutions for the end user, UK Specification was able to resolve issues with doorset design, scheduling and flow, successfully mitigating the risks associated with demanding, publicly-funded builds.

When late changes were needed at Little Ilford, for example, the team was able to supply an access control system that met the school’s requirements, whilst offering compliance with current regulations.

ASSA ABLOY UK Specification’s sector-specific solutions are supported by BIM objects, as well as whole life costing data. The company’s team works to provide a design-led service, liaising with individual architects and contractors to ensure clients’ needs are met, and public sector projects are completed sustainably and successfully.
