Cornwall Services on the A30 near Bodmin has become the first service station in the UK to install a Space to Change assisted wheelchair-accessible toilet developed by Clos-o-Mat.
The Space to Change toilet features the same key equipment as the larger Changing Places model, including an adjustable changing bench and hoist, but in a smaller space of 7.5m2.
The Space to Change toilet was created to plug the gap between conventional (Building Regulations Approved Document M 2013) wheelchair-accessible toilets, and the ‘desirable’, significantly larger Changing Places toilet facilities.
The concept was developed by Changing Places campaigners and Clos-o-Mat, to ensure that the personal hygiene needs of up to three million British children and adults who require changing and lifting facilities for their personal care are met when away from home.
Potential users of the Changing Places or Space to Change toilets include the 1.5 million wheelchair users and the one in 10 people who have either bladder or bowel incontinence (around 1.2 million people aged 65+ affected by faecal continence) in the UK. Other users include the 1.5 million people in the UK affected with learning disabilities, 1.2 million people who have suffered from strokes , 100,000 amputees and 30,000 children with cerebral palsy.
The Firefly Community, an online special needs resource, will continue to promote both Changing Places and Space to Change toilets by supporting campaigners and raising awareness of the need for accessible toilets that include a height adjustable changing bench and hoist.
