Changing Places ensures universal access at Trinity College Dublin

  • 4 Jul 2016

Trinity College Dublin has installed a Changing Places assisted accessible toilet as part of a €120,000 project that also included upgrading all of the enabled toilets in the building.

One of the world’s leading research universities, Trinity College Dublin has seen its student population increase 500% in the past 15 years, with more than 1400 attendees now registered with its Disability Service – 8% of its total student population.

To accommodate its disabled students, Trinity has invested in a Changing Places assisted accessible toilet at the entrance level into the Arts Building. Supplied by Clos-o-Mat, Changing Places facilities incorporate additional assistive technology including a hoist, height-adjustable adult-sized changing bench, height adjustable basin and toilet.

The College also chose to install a Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita wash & dry toilet in place of a conventional WC. The Palma Vita features built-in douching and drying facilities so that toilet tissue is not needed.

Declan Treanor of Trinity College explained: “The decision to install the Changing Place toilet was simple: we have a diverse population at Trinity and wanted to ensure all care was taken to ensure that any person can have toilet facilities available to them.

We wanted to go for the highest specification and best fit to meet, or exceed, Changing Places requirements, hence the incorporation of a Clos-o-Mat as well.”

The Changing Places toilet is now ‘desirable’ under Building Regulations Approved Document M and BS8300:2009 for all new build and refurbishment projects to which members of the public have access. Irish Technical Guidance Document Part M also cross references with BS9300:2009.

So far over 700 Changing Places facilities have been opened at venues across the UK.
