Protan membranes specified for new Hilton Garden Inn

Protan membranes specified to weatherproof new Hilton hotel

  • 11 Jul 2016

A combination of Protan’s EX-A 1.5mm polyester reinforced and fleece-backed membrane and its SE 1.6mm single ply membrane has been specified for the new Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland.

The new establishment, which sits adjacent to Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, is managed by SFC Hotels. Designed by Redox, it comprises three main blocks with flat roofs; the development’s primary contractor, Tolent Construction, enlisted the help of Metcalfe Roofing and Building Services to create said roofs.

In turn, Metcalfe specified 1,700 square metres of Protan EX-A 1.5mm polyester reinforced and fleece-backed membrane to weatherproof the building. A further 1,300 square metres of Protan’s SE 1.6mm single ply membrane was later mechanically fixed to the concrete and metal deck.

As Protan’s only available system that uses adhesives, EX-A offers a durability of over 30 years. Meanwhile, its SE single ply PVC membrane has been developed to provide air leakage control, in line with the latest Building Regulations.

Both certified to ≤ -30°, the membranes are able to resist and protect against adverse weather conditions, making them suitable for flat roof installation.

Protan was able to provide technical support, delivering the material in stages to ensure that a phased installation could be carried out at the new Hilton Garden Inn. The company offers a full support service – from technical advice and specification, through to in-house CAD design – at its Warrington-based office.
