Clos-o-Mat has developed a design advice package for adapting school premises for special needs in preparation for the fresh intake in September.
According to the latest figures, more than 1.5 million of the 8.4 million pupils in England have special needs.
The number of children with special needs going into mainstream education is rising and those continuing their higher education up to at least 19 is now actually more than non-disabled students. Those going to University is also increasing.
To help address the special needs of disabled students, such as going to the toilet, Clos-o-Mat has developed a design advice package including Department of Education best practice, technical support including white papers, CAD blocks and videos.
The package also advises on survey, supply, installation, commissioning and subsequent service and maintenance.
Clos-o-Mat’s away from home toilets project manager Kelvin Grimes explained how each individual project requires a different specialised approach:
“For one Council-led project we have done recently, for example, across 12 schools, the needs were met by adaptations ranging from a paediatric support over a WC through to a fully Building Bulletin compliant hygiene room/care suite- all of which we were able to execute expediently and in full consultation with all relevant professionals involved.
As a result, children with special needs in the county have been able to start, and move school, without worrying about suitable toilet provision. It may seem a small thing to many of us, but it makes a huge difference in helping smooth their transition.”
