Contour Casings has designed, developed and installed a bespoke anti-climb bullnose fascia to improve safeguarding at the Dorothy Pattison Hospital.
As part of the Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, Dorothy Pattison Hospital provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as inpatient services and health-based safe places for its patients.
However, an external rest area presented a health and safety risk; patients were able to climb onto the roof of the main building complex and abscond from the site.
To ensure compliance with its duty of care, the hospital specified an anti-climb solution to secure the roofline. Having previously supplied and installed a number of LST radiator guards for the Trust, Contour was approached; the company was tasked with designing and developing a bespoke fascia to remedy the hospital’s safeguarding issues.
The company proposed an anti-climb bullnose fascia with a functional, yet aesthetically pleasing, design. Contour was keen to maintain the visual appearance of the building, which presents itself as a place of care and recuperation, as opposed to an institution.
Contour’s team was forced to address a number of technical and site related issues before the installation could take place: this included the incorporation of a protected roofline guttering system into the fascia, and integration with the existing rain water downpipes.
Because of this, many cut outs had to be factored in at the manufacturing stage, to allow for downpipes and such items. The primary bullnose panels were created from a 3mm aluminium sheet, pressed and rolled to BS EN 485/515/573. A heavy duty integrated internal framework ensures the fascia’s anti-climb structure.
To finish, the panels were PPC coated in the customer’s chosen colour.
The completed fascia runs from one end of the building to the other, covering an unbroken 45 metres.
