A community allotment in Stoke-on-Trent has been revitalised in the final event of Apprentice Week, a dedicated recruitment programme run by Novus Property Solutions
Located in the city’s Middleport region, the Mott Place Allotments community garden is managed by Root ‘n Fruit, a local charity which donates all produce to the elderly. The charity offers voluntary opportunities for disabled, unemployed and vulnerable individuals, looking to meet new people and gain skills.
As part of Novus’ Apprentice Week, 18 budding apprentices worked alongside six volunteers from the company’s team to weed the allotment and create new paths and raised beds. The garden’s composting toilet also benefited from a refurbishment.
The directors were present to judge the apprentices’ performance: those who impressed Novus during the one-day challenge will be rewarded with a coveted apprenticeship.
Throughout its history, Novus has been dedicated to recruiting young, talented apprentices. This year, it launched a bespoke social media campaign to attract individuals seeking a job in the construction industry.
Out of the 215 applications received, 18 candidates from across the UK were invited to take part in a week of training and activities at Novus’ headquarters, which is based in Stoke-on-Trent. Specialisms included joinery, carpentry and painting and decorating, amongst others.
After judging the work at Mott Place Allotments, Novus will offer full-time apprenticeships in a variety of trades to a handful of successful candidates at offices across the UK.
