After a visit to the stunning Sky Garden, Howard Chapman reflects on the ever-changing London skyline. With 400 more towers already in planning, approved or under construction in the capital, will these ruin the iconic cityscape?
Perched on top of the ‘Walkie Talkie’ building, the Sky Garden at 20 Fenchurch Street is a unique public space that spans three storeys. It includes exquisitely landscaped public gardens, with 360 degree, uninterrupted views across the capital and beyond. And it’s free!
The Sky Garden is a great place to see the whole of London and spot the plethora of cranes helping erect new towers. 400 tall buildings are in planning, approved or under construction.
The London skyline is set to change again but this is nothing new.
The Daily Mail offers an interesting set of images showing how an ever-changing architectural view of London is nothing new, with the outline of the capital’s buildings constantly evolving through the 20th century.
The article looks back at the stories behind the mass construction and renewal through the decades including the City of London, Canary Wharf, the South Bank and Battersea and experienced mass construction through the decades, from the Oxo Tower in 1900 to The Shard completed in 2012 using 95 per cent recycled materials.
However, there is concern that the iconic skyscape will be crowded out and perhaps ruined out by all the new towers being built. What do you think?
