PROTEC2 CLIQ enhances controlled drug security at the QE

  • 16 Aug 2016

Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital – known as the QE – has improved the security of its controlled medicines by implementing Abloy UK’s PROTEC2 CLIQ and Traka21 advanced key management systems.

Alike many other British healthcare organisations, one of the main issues faced by the QE is medicine management. Poor key management can have a detrimental impact on nursing efficiency; as staff can find it difficult to keep track of key holders, they often waste a substantial amount of time searching for people in order to gain access to controlled drugs.

Abloy UK’s PROTEC2 CLIQ key system was specified to provide an effective security solution for the hospital, whilst enabling convenient access to the drug cabinets.

PROTEC2 CLIQ

Based on mechanical disc cylinders, combined with encrypted electronic locking and identification, PROTEC2 CLIQ offers an access control solution suitable for implementation in healthcare environments, where security is paramount.

As the lock is powered by the CLIQ key, no batteries or wires are required to power it; this makes it an ideal retrofit solution for applications such as mobile drug trolleys.

Remote key management equips users with the capability to remove lost or stolen keys from the system, enhancing the security of the QE’s controlled drugs. The system can also provide audit trails on locks and padlocks, allowing Nurse Managers and Chief Pharmacists to view reports on who has accessed certain cabinets or trolleys at a particular time.

To increase security further, PROTEC2 CLIQ was combined with Abloy UK’s Traka21 key management system.

By assigning each nurse access to a single key for the duration of their shift, they are only able to open the cabinets that they are authorised to access.

The nurses can access specific keys by entering a PIN code; the keys must then be validated via a wall programming unit.
