Cembrit’s Alpina natural slate has been selected for use in the redevelopment and refurbishment of North Devon’s Woolacombe Bay Holiday Village.
Located in the Devonshire parish of Mortehoe, the prize-winning holiday park is a popular destination with vacationing families. The resort has recently been redeveloped and extended under a multi-million pound construction project.
Its old entertainment complex is a single-storey brick building, which was erected in the 1970s. As part of the renovation project, a large building was designed to act as a suitable extension for the listed building.
The new building was conceived by Peregrine Mears Architects. Cembrit’s Alpina natural slates were specified to provide a contemporary roof covering for the complex’s multi-pitched roof.
DJT Roofing was contracted to install around 35,000 Alpina slates in a grey/green shade. The company utilised the hook fixing method to ensure the slates were secure; they were locked together to achieve an orderly finish.
Boasting the ability to withstand severe weather conditions, the natural slate was deemed suitable for the coastal development. The flat-surfaced product is also resistant to the effects of sunlight, acid rain and ultra-violet light.
Alpina has been tested to ensure compliance with BS EN 12326-1:2004; it contains no unstable materials, such as pyrites, carbon and un-oxidised irons.
Selected from Brazilian deposits, the natural slate is produced at several facilities based in Papagaios. It is available in a range of sizes and two colours – grey/green and graphite.
