Gilberts has supplied a pair of continuous natural ventilation wall assemblies to the Combined College Boathouse, a new facility for the combined Cambridge colleges of King’s, Selwyn and Churchill and Leys School.
Designed by RHP, the Boathouse is based on the banks of the River Cam and has been constructed to meet and exceed the latest Building Standards, whilst also enhancing the character of its location in a Conservation Area.
The building uses natural resources as much as possible and has been designed to deliver a 25% improvement in Predicted Building Emission Rates against the target for the type of building, and half the legal requirement limit regarding air leakage.
Natural ventilation was used as possible to achieve the design objectives, with Gilberts Blackpool, a specialist in independent air movement, specified to provide the natural ventilation components and air movement elements for the building’s supplementary mechanical ventilation.
Gilberts provided a pair of bespoke natural ventilation wall assemblies, incorporating its WHZ50 external louvres with class A weathering, each with a VN75 damper, 440mm deep attenuator and internal HGH deflection grille, controlled by a combined CO2 and temperature sensor. This allowed fresh air to be delivered to the main clubroom, office and kitchen area without weather ingress.
The facility’s fitness room, WCs and changing room utilised supplementary mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, featuring Gilberts’ WGF75 through-wall louvres and DGA internal ceiling diffusers to ensure adequate removal of moisture and heat, whilst ensuring that any excessive noise remains within the building.
