‘Closed loop’ recycling earns CMS a Scottish Resource Award

CMS Window Systems’ achieved the accolade for ‘Best Circular Economy Initiative’ at the Scottish Resource Awards for its ‘closed loop’ recycling processes.

Praised for its environmentally sustainable operations, the company was presented with the award before an audience of 400 guests at Edinburgh. Both the Scottish Government and the award’s organisers, the CIWM, praised CMS for its commitment to conserving finite resources, retaining the value of objects and supporting jobs.

‘Closed loop’ recycling has been at the heart of CMS’s philosophy since its formation in 2006. Its recycling processes ensure that 95% of its waste materials are directed away from landfill, each year.

‘Closed loop’ recycling

With the right processes and support from supply chain partners, materials such as PVCu, glass and aluminium can be recycled with ease.

After 35 years of use, CMS’s windows are re-introduced into the supply chain for recreation into new windows. The waste PVC and glass from old extracted windows is separated, before it is returned to CMS’s supply chain partners for re-use in products and projects.

All windows and doors extracted as part of the company’s refurbishment contracts are separated into its component parts at its recycling plants, which are based in Kirkcaldy and Cumbernauld.

The strengthening core of CMS’s PVCu windows contain 100% recycled PVC; the outside frames are composed from 10% of this material. Overall, its double glazed sealed units feature 38% of recycled content.
