Andrews heat pump chiller units ensure safe encasement of nuclear reactors

  • 27 Oct 2016

A nuclear power station has benefited from the temporary installation of an Andrews Chiller Hire 100kW low temperature heat pump chiller unit to automatically manage and control fluctuating temperatures during concrete encasement of the nuclear reactors.

89_0083-100kw-chiller-issuedA total of four 100kW low-temperature compact heat pumps were installed, each capable of providing both hot and cold water, with the capacity to reduce temperatures to as low as -15°C. Due to the varying range of desired cooling temperatures at the power station, an Andrews heat pump chiller unit proved essential.

Following a site survey of the power station, it was estimated that temporary equipment would be needed for approximately three weeks; the time it would take to implement and pressurise the concrete enclosures which would envelope the station’s reactors.

Throughout the plant’s life, regular check-ups are required as a safety precaution, such as tightness tests to detect any leaks that may be present in the structure.

Once the chillers were fully operational, the contractors could begin carrying out the assessments. Due to the fast processing and installation time, Andrews was able to guarantee that the contractors could complete all tests quickly and confirm their compliance with industry legislation.
