System 500 waterproof membrane used for BRE’s flood resilient home

The Delta System 500 has been specified for the BRE’s new flood resilient home, the BRE Victorian Terrace, developed to demonstrate how smart design and innovative products can help homeowners limit damage and recover quickly from flooding.

Funded by the BRE Trust and AXA amongst others, the BRE Victorian Terrace comes in the wake of recent flooding in the UK which has caused significant damage to to properties, with repairs ranging from £30-100k per dwelling.

The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the effective ways to repair and refurbish a house that has been flooded, which may be at risk of being flooded again: there is an estimated 5.2 million homes in the UK considered at risk from surface, river and coastal flooding.

In addition to flood resistant doors, windows and a resilient kitchen, the project includes water resistant wall and floor membranes that channel water towards drains and sumps to quickly disperse water.

Injected cavity wall insulation, thermal board and PUR spray foam will be demonstrated, as well as robust boards and cement tanking. The Delta System 500 cavity drain membrane has been specified for waterproofing the walls and floors.

The BRE Victorian Terrace will also feature toilet and sink non-return valves and will address practical issues like the placement of electronics and home appliances. 

Once complete, the building will be flooded with water, to test how quickly the home recovers and becomes functional again, as well as what damage occurs.
