Leicester Tigers launch Concrete Rugby programme with Aggregate Industries

  • 22 Nov 2016

Leicester Tigers Rugby Club has partnered with Aggregate Industries to create a five-week community programme designed to promote healthy lifestyle, teamwork and self-confidence amongst young people across the Midlands.

The ‘Concrete Rugby’ scheme takes place over five weeks and is open to young people based in Leicester city centre and Leicestershire High School. The programme teaches them how to play touch or contact rugby, to encourage an active lifestyle whilst teaching new skills and spreading the ethos of teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.

The 2014 Health Survey for England found that 31.2 percent of children aged 2-15 were classed as either overweight or obese. Concrete Rugby aims to curb this trend by promoting the benefits of sports and a healthy lifestyle – reaching over 1,000 children throughout the rugby season.

Concrete Rugby also features desk-based learning which gives the team the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues including healthy eating, drugs, road safety, being safe online and the dangers of peer pressure.

The programme officially launched on Sunday 20th November at the home fixture of Leicester Tigers vs Harlequins.

Aggregate Industries CEO, François Petry, comments: “In Aggregates Industries, Health & Safety underpins everything we do. Ensuring a safe environment for our colleagues and encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle is our number one priority as a business. We at Aggregate Industries are delighted to be working in partnership with Leicester Tigers.

As a local company, we pride ourselves on playing an active and valuable role in the community. We’ve already had some initial sessions at local schools, with a good mix of boys and girls participating and the feedback has been very positive. We are delighted with the results so far and look forward to an exciting year ahead.”
