Eco Countryside Cycle Kerb collects top innovation prize

  • 25 Nov 2016

Charcon’s Eco Countryside Cycle Kerb Segregation System has been named the Innovation of the Year in the ‘Materials’ category at the 2016 London Construction Awards.

Eco Countryside Kerb is a bespoke hard landscaping solution developed to serve as a safe and sustainable segregation system in London. The system has been used for the Cycle Superhighway 2 (CS2) to create a unique integrated system that reduces traffic disruption and cycle related incidents in the area.

The system was initially developed as an alternative to the imported granite kerb configuration with concrete block paving inlay that was used previously. The material replicates the look of natural granite, whilst providing a 33 percent carbon footprint reduction (due to being manufactured in the UK) and utilises 82 percent recycled and secondary material content.

An added benefit is its faster installation time, with construction of the cycle route reduced by 50 percent compared to the installation of traditional granite.

Charcon supplied a total 24,000 l/m of the product to improve safety for cyclists and other road users.

The Eco Countryside Kerb is the latest in Charcon’s range of cycle kerbs which have been installed for various cycleway projects across the UK, including in Cambridgeshire and Nottingham.

The London Construction Award was presented to Mike Davies, category manager at Charcon, on Wednesday 26th October at London’s Royal Garden Hotel.
