Marziale brick specified for Glasgow Ronald McDonald respite home

  • 10 Jan 2017

Wienerberger has collaborated with architects Keppie Design and contractor CCG Scotland on the new Ronald McDonald House in Glasgow, a ‘home from home’ that provides shelter and comfort to the families of children being treated at the adjacent Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

Wienerberger’s Marziale brick was specified for the development, contributing towards a design that reflected the surrounding character of the ship building urban context. The whites and subtle buff tones of the facing brick were chosen to bring a softness and warmth to the exterior.

A series of white brick forms were interconnected by green roofed, white concrete porticos to create an industrial silhouette fronting Govan Road.

The building comprises a series of semi-enclosed courtyards, compete with vibrant trees, shrubs and plants, contrasting with the institutional context of the South Glasgow Hospital Campus.

The deign of products offers a contrast between the rustic white brick and smooth dark aluminium of the windows, where the heaviness of the brick and white textured tones play off the lightweight and dark toned aluminium counterpart.
