The recent introduction of a trio of Stannah Maxilift motor room-less passenger lifts has increased accessibility for residents at King Edward VII Estate, near Midhurst in West Sussex.
The former sanatorium has been renovated and converted into 162 apartments, duplexes and communal facilities surrounded by eight acres of Registred Gardens with full resident access to the 165-acre estate, in the South Downs National Park.
Receiving updates to include the three Stannah 8-person, motor room-less (MRLi) Maxilifts supplementing stair access over three five floors, the original features have been restored, conserved and further enhanced.
Andrew Patrick, Senior Surveyor at City & Country, who specified the lifts, explained that two of the hydraulic passenger lifts are wall mounted, and the third model is single entry and was supplied with an FX structure that allowed installation in a challenging location.
Stannah’s FX structure lifts are unique as the lift is supplied in its own structure, comprising a ‘shaft within a shaft’ which incorporates a lifting beam and negates the need for scaffolding within the shaft, therefore saving both time and money on site.
Stannah carried out a site survey and as a result, recommended hooks/studs and protective lift car drapes to protect the special finishes of the lift car whilst residents moved in.
The development’s design aesthetic is reflected in the lift interiors with matt grey Zintect electro zinc-coated sheet steel, jade-green gloss Perspex panels, bubble ceilings, grab rails, half-height rear mirrors, and carpeted floors flowing through from the landings. Car preference switches and keypads for priority access to the penthouse apartment are fitted to the control panels within the lift.
All regulation and standards are fulfilled by Maxilifts, including EN81-73 – lift shutdown in event of a fire and the Equality Act’s access-for-all imperative. Moreover, they are in keeping with the overall project and have helped King Edward VII Estate win a number of accolades including WhatHouse? Award Gold for Best Renovation two years in a row.
