NHBC registered more than 150,000 new homes in the UK in 2016, the second highest in almost a decade.
NHBC registered 151,687 new houses in 2016, a slight decrease of 2% compared to 2015 which saw 155,504 new homes registered. A 70% increase in registrations was demonstrated by the 2016 figures, compared to levels seen at the time of the housing crash in 2008/09.
In 2015, 117,506 new homes were registered in the private sector, compared to 115,689 in 2016. Seven out of 12 regions experienced an increase in registrations as demonstrated by NHBC’s latest data, most notably Yorkshire & Humberside (+27%), South East (+14%) and North West (+12%), compared to 2015 figures.
In addition, a 4% increase has been seen for the overall UK total excluding London registrations, in comparison to the corresponding figures from 2015, with 134,365 registrations in 2016 compared to 129,744 the previous year, for the UK without the capital.
Also marginally up 1% on 2015’s total (140,407) was the number of new homes completed during 2016.
The highest number of detached homes was registered in 2016, the highest number registered since 2004 in the UK, in terms of house types, with a total of 46,118 being registered and the highest number of semi-detached since records began 30 years ago (38,999).
NHBC is the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, therefore the registration statistics are a lead indicator of the country’s new homes market.
Enjoying around 80% market share in UK new home warranties, NHBC has been committed to driving up quality and raising standards in house-building for over 80 years.
The UK house-building sector has remained resilient, despite initial caution around Brexit and strong regional growth outside of London has been seen, according to Mark Jones, NHBC Business Development Director when commenting on the annual statistics.
He added that both industry and consumer confidence remans high and early signs indicate that the new year has begun positively.
