Aggregate Industries has worked in collaboration with Highways England and Kier Construction on the UK’s first Hot-on-Hot in line paving trial. Part of the Area 13 Framework contract, the trial was undertaken on the M6 Junction 36-35 S/B C/W at Burton to Cinderbarrow between the 27th and 28th July 2016.
Widely used on most major roads in Germany, Hot-on-Hot is a concept new to the UK, created by placing two asphalt layers at the same time, a Binder Course and a Surface Course, to form a fully homogenous layer.
Utilising a high compaction screed to provide full compaction throughout the layer, the Binder Course is laid atop of the Surface Course material, which uses a transfer vehicle to feed it into the paver. This allows for continuous paving of the Surface Course layer.
The Hot-on-Hot concept creates a fully bonded pavement out of two different products, providing a water tight interface, eliminating any possible bonding failures, whilst saving on costs.
On this particular site the original specification was for 60mm of Binder Course and 40mm of Surface Course, by using the Hot-on-Hot system the material thicknesses where changed to 70mm of Binder Course and 30mm of Surface Course.
