A multi-million pound cultural centre has been built in South Shields. The three-storey building features a circular façade, created with the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel
‘The Word, National Centre for the Written Word’, or ‘The Word’, has been designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects. It is part of a £100 million regeneration scheme, carried out by South Tyneside Council and Muse Developments.
The development, which was overseen by contractors Bowmer & Kirkland, was completed last October. It accommodates an IT suite, an exhibition space, a café and a library, with 3D printers situated throughout.
Incorporating sustainable materials with low environmental impact, the new building reflects South Tyneside Council’s Sustainable Development goals.
To achieve the architect’s vision for the project, the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel was specified to create the desired curved structure. The system was engineered to provide a smooth exterior envelope: the structural insulated panels (SIPs) were cut into narrow widths to ensure they could be easily fixed to the concrete frame.
The 142mm panel will help the building to achieve U-values of 0.20 W/m2.K; its OSB/3 facing and jointing system will help to minimise unnecessary air loss.
Kingspan’s manufacturing facility, where the panels are produced, has achieved both FSC-C109304 and PEFC Chain of Custody certification,
The Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel is also available in a 172mm thickness.
A rundown office and warehouse building completely transformed into a modern headquarters for Atlas Copco has been fitted with more than 120 internal fire doors from Enfield Speciality Doors.
