Aggregate Industries helping to create a new generation of construction workers

Following a new partnership with Aggregate Industries, Coalville, Leicestershire may be home to a new generation of sustainable construction workers, engineers and environmental enthusiasts.

Aggregate Industries is a business committed to community development and education and is working closely with Newbridge High School in a bid to provide hands-on understanding of the modern construction world to students.

The aim is that children can discover the industry and its importance in shaping the world and the breadth of career opportunities that it offers.

Students received an exclusive tour of the business’ Bardon Hill Quarry site as part of the ongoing collaboration, and were taught about the construction industry, state of the art operations and the importance of safety.

The students were equipped with full protective clothing and had the opportunity to witness land regeneration first-hand, learning how the land had changed and the vast size of the operation.

Aggregate Industries hosted a special ‘Environment Day’ at the school where Sustainable Resource Manager, Simon Drury, taught students about modern quarrying practices and the important part it has to play in lessening the impact construction has on the environment while delivering vital construction materials across the UK.

Additionally, computing students had the opportunity to see the large IT department in operation and talk with digital technicians while visiting the company’s operational head office in Bardon, as part of an ongoing digital focus.

Students have been inspired by the business’ IT team, to start work developing their very own app, using software and skills used in the real world.

Chief Information Officer at Aggregate Industries, Mike Gibbons commented that Aggregate Industries is committed to helping the surrounding community and wants to make a real difference in terms of helping to educate, inspire and showcase the full range of career opportunities available.

In the future, colleagues from different occupations within the Aggregate Industries will be visiting the school on World Work Day, in June 2017. It will aim to advise students on qualifications, training and what it is like to work in the industry and host a road safety session.

Newbridge High School teacher, Judith Warren, said she was pleased with the impact working with Aggregate Industries has had on students at the school as the real-world settings and challenges have helped to put their knowledge into practice.
