A mini documentary video has been released by the Fire Industry Association covering the need for qualified fire alarm technicians.
The video is on the company’s YouTube channel and website, titled ‘The need for qualified fire alarm technicians explained in 9 minutes’. The nine minute documentary explores the skills gap within the fire detection and alarm sector and the reasons behind it. The video features a range of industry experts from across the UK, offering insight into the skills gap.
The video also features commentaries from recruiters and managing directors of various fire detection and alarm installation and maintenance companies, each offering their viewpoint on the need for a formal qualification to close the skills gap.
Each face featured in the documentary has their own story to tell and the documentary shows images of detectors stuck carelessly in corners and one even on a loft hatch, demonstrating why a qualification is necessary.
FIA Chairman Martin Harvey and CEO Ian Moore also appear in the video, offering information about the services standard, EN 16763, which specifies the level of education required to be allowed to work in the fire safety services sector.
Currently, qualifications in the fire detection and alarm sector don’t exist but the video provides valuable insight into the sector and the real and urgent need for a qualification from a range of people within the industry.
The video also states that the FIA will be making a big announcement on the subject on May 2nd.
