Charcon helps to regenerate Gateshead BIG

Charcon has supplied a complimentary range of precast concrete flags, blocks and kerbs to Evolution Gateshead for its renowed multi-million regeneration project: Gateshead BIG.

Over the next 15-20 years, Gateshead BIG will be developed, consisting of 19 sites, covering 70 hectares of land and delivering 2,400 new homes.

Avon Street, Birtley Northside and Bensham & Saltwell are part of phase one of the development, which commenced in March 2014 and is due for completion this coming June.

Architects, landscape architects and surveyors prepared designs and Charcon was tasked to provide hard landscaping solutions that would pave the way for good vehicular access and safe pedestrian routes.

Charcon recommended an appropriate and cost-effective palette of over 10,600m2 of hard landscaping materials. 5,880m2 of Moordale Textured flag paving in Grey was installed, offering a solution for the pedestrian areas.

Moordale Textured incorporates yorkstone and limestone aggregates for top performance and durability and slip-resistance.

In addition, 2,450m2 of Woburn Rumbled cobble paving in Rustic was used for various accompanying walkways and thoroughfares. Woburn Rumbled has numerous colour mix options to generate subtle shade difference between adjacent blocks.

2,270m2 of Europa block paving in Brindle was specified for areas expected to see heavy-use trafficking, with a high level of durability and good grip. Various shades and sizes are available, including three mixed colours and a mechanical lay option.

Charcon also supplied Bitish Standard Edging and Kerbs in Plain Grey, for the finishing touches.

Category manager for Charcon, Mike Davies, explained that Charcon liased closely with the ground worker and the merchant to get the job done to the highest standards.
