Red Tape

Housebuilding ‘red tape’ to be scrapped first following Brexit

  • 25 Apr 2017

Housebuilding will be the initial focus of the Red Tape Initiative, it has been revealed.

Set to begin in June, the initiative will identify EU regulations that can be swiftly amended as part of the Brexit process, to improve productivity upon the UK’s exit from the European Union.

The cross-party initiative, coordinated by former government policy minister Sir Oliver Letwin MP, will be a collaborative effort with the Home Builders Federation, which will identify financial, technical and environmental requirements deemed ‘unnecessary’ for achieving public policy objectives.

A second inquiry will also take place later this year focusing on the EU regulations concerning infrastructure construction.

Additional support will be given by an in-house legal team, the TUC, the CBI and the Federation of Small Businesses, as well as other bodies.

The group has raised £500,000 in funding from business donors and will target “a few significant, quick wins that will boost jobs and prosperity in the UK immediately after Brexit,” commented Letwin.
