Kiwa Watertec is offering manufacturers an alternative way to gain approval for thermostatic mixing valves (type TMV2 and TMV3) and tempering valves through the launch of its own certification scheme.
The Kiwa Watertec scheme takes a ‘three pronged approach’ in testing the product, checking the manufacturer’s production process by means of annual Factory Production Control (FPC) inspections, and re-testing certified products over the lifetime of the product.
This comprehensive approach ensures that the TMVs are fit for purpose, manufactured to a certain standard, and that later releases of the model match the standards of the original product.
TMV, or thermostatic mixing valves, control the temperature of water for showering, bathing and hand-washing, to provide safe outlet temperatures.
TMV’s blend hot and cold water to give a pre-determined mixed water temperature at the outlet. The thermostatic element of the valve expands and contract, it moves to regulate the amount of cold and hot water entering the valve.
If the cold water supply were to fail slowly, over a long period of time, the valve will limit the hot supply to maintain a safe temperature at the outlet.
In case of total failure of the cold water supply, the thermostatic element will expand fully to close the valve and shut down the hot supply preventing scalding water from reaching the outlet.
TMV type 2 compliant valves are suitable for normal domestic situations. These valves will provide comfort in use under normal supply conditions and safety in the event of an abnormal supply condition.
TMV type 3 products can be used in areas that require enhanced safety. These products are normally specified for use in higher risk environments such as hospitals and care homes.
