Safeguard launches CPD on causes and treatment of rising damp

  • 5 Jun 2017

Safeguard Europe has introduced a new seminar that covers the causes of rising damp and ways in which it can be treated.

Designed to keep professionals up-to-date with the latest materials and systems, the RIBA-accredited ‘Rising Damp: Causes and Treatment’ CPD provides a thorough briefing on the causes of rising damp, and the potential treatments available.

Rising damp is created by water travelling through the pores in a wall’s material. The height it reaches is dictated by the pore size and the rate of evaporation from the surface of the wall.

The Energy Saving Trust has warned of another potential problem that can exacerbate rising damp, which is limiting evaporation. Once water has risen up the wall, salts in the water, such as nitrates and chlorides, can draw moisture from the air into the wall and cause even greater problems.

The seminar details the most popular treatments used for rising damp, including chemical DPCs. These have been developed from the early silicone or stearate liquids to silane/siloxane cream injections from 2000 and in 2014, to silane rods.

Silane rods, the most effective treatment of rising damp, ensure the even dispersion of waterproofing modules, which is vital to forming a complete DPC.

The seminar also covers the issue of replastering, which is often required when treating rising damp, using a special plaster to prevent the recurrence of problems due to hygroscopic salts.

The CPD highlights a modern alternative to the 3:1, sand:cement render solution, which sees a salt-retardant primer applied to the wall and an adhesive which resists moisture and salt, used to attach insulated plasterboard.

‘Rising Damp: Causes and Treatment’ shows that rising damp is a complex issue. Whilst debate about it continues, understanding the science behind the treatment is an important step in making an informed decision when confronting the issue.
