Catnic Roofing defines the old from the new for modern farm extension

  • 12 Jul 2017

Catnic’s SSR2 Standing Seam Roofing and Cladding system has been used to create a roof finish for a contemporary new build extension in rural West Lothian.

The new roof contrasts the original farm outbuilding, which was restored and converted to housing in the 1980s.

The main house was originally an outbuilding, built around 125 years ago and covering an area of 165m2. Its traditionally restored rubble stone walls are complemented by an orange pantiled roof, retaining the building’s original architectural heritage.

The owner asked Hardie Associates to create a new build extension that would feature a kitchen, dining, family room to the ground floor with a master bedroom at first floor level.

The new extension was designed as a storey and a half construction, adjacent to the main building.

The timber frame cavity walling is finished in a sharp off-white render and larch timber cladding. The exterior is punctuated with large aluminium clad timber windows in a grey finish.

The Catnic SSR2 Standing Seam Roofing and Cladding system was chosen to provide a modern contrast for the roofing, to complement the main house.

Working together with Stewart MacDonald of McDonald Roofing Contracts Ltd, based in Armadale in West Lothian, the team worked up the roofing detail, he explains: “A 48-degree roof pitch has been created using the Catnic SSR2 as well as a flat roof element. We attended an installation training course at the Catnic training centre in Caerphilly, which covered off measuring and setting out as well as a whole host of other installation techniques.”

The homeowners explained that the SSR2 system provides the sharp finish that was desired to ensure that there was a clear separation between the old stone house and the new modern addition.

The SSR2 system is manufactured to meet all relevant legislation, including load bearing for wind speed in accordance with EN 1991-4 and weather tightness in accordance with BS 5534 Parts 1 and 2.

In addition, SSR2 is BRE Green Guide Rated ‘A’ and at end of life and is 100% recyclable.
