Alban Sussex Blend tiles from Wienerberger have been used on Kingsdown House, a new accommodation building at The King’s School in Canterbury.
The King’s School campus is a historical site, adjoining Canterbury’s City Wall, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument in close proximity to a World Heritage Site.
Thus, the new boarding house development had to be carefully considered and overseen by Historic England and a series of conservation teams and planners. In addition, the build had to be completed to suit the school’s academic schedule, restricting construction work to a short timetable.
The new building was required to demonstrate a high degree of quality, enhancing and complementing its location.
Tasked with carrying out a detailed and careful specification for Kingsdown House, Walters & Cohen Architects introduced Wienerberger to the scheme.
The architect took inspiration from Kentish construction techniques, and worked with Wienerberger to deliver clay tiles that would reflect the architectural heritage of the site.
In place of modern interlocking tiles, the company’s Alban Sussex Blend tiles were specified to create the roof and walls of Kingsdown House. The tiles enabled the architect to create a simplistic facade, in keeping with the surrounding aesthetics.
Wienerberger also produced a series of Alban Sussex Blend bespoke Mansard and Gutter tiles to use at the eaves junction with the wall.
To ensure a neat and seamless finish, no external angle tiles were used; instead, all corner tiles were precision cut to create an elegant edge against the aluminium corner trim.
In addition, all tiles under the windows were cut to assist in waterproofing the building, and fixed using a dedicated Wienerberger adhesive.
