Joanne Roberts, Category Product Manager for Roof and Landscape at Wienerberger looks at how social media can work well as a business tool for contractors.

Social media can be useful for growing your audience, reaching potential customers, and understanding what engages your audience most.

In addition, some social media platforms can help companies to showcase their work, making it easier for others to really imagine and see in situ how their project has developed. Other platforms are useful for sourcing the different services and products required.

However, getting set up on any social media site can be quite daunting so here are some tips for getting the most out of social media and which platforms are the best to use and why.

Firstly it is important to set up a username relevant to your company that is obviously linked to your business. You should also reflect your company and include your logo and a link to your website in your company profile.

2_FotorInstagram is one of the biggest online image sharing platforms and is ideal for sharing professional and captivating images of your work to promote your business. The use of hashtags on Instagram makes your content easy to find when users search keywords.

A contact button is now available for business pages on Instagram, making it easier for potential clients to get in touch and enquire about your services.

Pinterest is another visually focused platform, which is an online pin board that uses just images. The ability to organise your content on the boards allows visitors the chance to go through your portfolio with ease. Architects use this feature as a tool to scope out previous work and products used.

Other platforms are also available such as Twitter and Facebook but Instagram and Pinterest are particularly useful for contractors. The way these platforms allow you to share and digest project information means they are fast becoming the go to tools when it comes to collaboration in the construction industry.
